Presented by the Asolare Fine Arts Foundation in the Atrium Gallery of the Park Building in Winston-Salem NC in October and November 2011, this is an exhibition of Franklyn Millman's photographs made over the last seven years during his travels and while living in North Carolina. Even though these images are from many disparate places, his photographs have the power to evoke and reflect our common experience in any place.
Franklyn Millman has been photographing seemingly his entire life. As a child he photographed children in his neighborhood and sold the images as a way of making money. In 1999, he set up a formal darkroom in his home to print black and white images. Since then he has witnessed the evolution of the digital image, and now works in a digital darkroom in his home, involving all aspects of the process- capture, processing and printing.
"Although I was formally educated in the sciences -- physics, medicine, math, have always sought out a higher understanding of the arts - opera, painting, and photography. As young man living on the West Coast, I taught myself to use a camera while being inspired by the work of Ansel Adams.
"More recently I have taken workshops with contemporary photographers Bruce Barnbaum , John Paul Caponigro, Eddie Soloway, Bob Krist and Tony Sweet.
For the past dozen years I have been a member of the Piedmont Photography Club and have served as its president for two years. I am also a member of the Carolina Nature Photographers Association."
These images were captured with a Nikon D3s or Canon 1Dll for older pictures.. The prints you see here are printed on Exhibition Fiber and Hot Press Bright papers by Epson and printed with an Epson 7900 printer. Everything is mounted to be archival.
Franklyn Millman's repertoire includes studio work, travel, event, and street photography with a special emphasis on travel photography. With his partner, Susan Von Cannon, he has photographed many high profiled local events in their community during the past sixteen years, including the River Run Film Festival.
"Photography is a means to edify and enrich our lives and relationships."
