As a newcomer to patchwork and quilting I enjoyed your video. A good tutor needs to be able to go back to basics and be on the same level as the learner. Thanks. I will watch any of your free video tutorials again.!

I am new to sewing and am wondering why she doesn't backstitch each time she starts. I assumed that a person is always supposed to backstitch at first to lock in the stitch to keep it from unraveling?? Would the binding serve that purpose or would it all come apart in the wash?

The easiest way I've found to save my fingers from those safety pins is a get a washable spray baste. It's great for holding all the layers together, but you should clean off your needle and shuttle race (for horizontal machines) after several hours of sewing through. Be sure to use a light spray, if you use to much it will take multiple washes before you fabrics feel soft again.
Spray basting is great for projects of all sizes, even these small place mats.

While most of us were taught to backstitch everytime we started sewing it really isn't necessary. The extra stitches can create bulk in that area which can cause pressing problems and leave unsightly lumps when the seam is opened.
The seam ends will end up being attached to another piece of fabric and thus secured.
