April 4th METal Breakfast

All eyes are focused at the CTIA Conference in Las Vegas. At this weeks METal we will talk about the news coming from the Carries, Handset Manufactures and Peripherals Makers.




At top of the list are femtocells, which are little cell phone towers for your house. It will improve reception by routing your cell phone calls to the internet, taking strain off the under-built U.S. cell-tower system. But is it fair to shift the cost to the consumer, and clog up the internet?

Voice to Text, and vice versa. Anyone who has used Google Voice can see that a phones ability to understand what you are saying is getting pretty good. How long before decision between touchscreen or slide out keyboard moot because the phone just types what you say?

Mobile VoIP. Skype, is rolling out its iPhone app & Blackberry. But carriers still restrict how it can be used over Wi-Fi only, so as not to decimate the number of minutes that customers pay for. Meantime, a small company is trying to start a low-cost all VoIP mobile voice and data service. More on that later.

Transition to 4G. As Clearwire and Sprint pledge that 10 cities will have a phone network that rivals the speed of wired service, there is some debate over how it will best be done. High speed Nerdvana, or a debacle in the making?
