This is a rarely, if ever, seen clip from the Broadway musical Applause, of Tony Award winning star Lauren Bacall singing "But Alive," which takes place in a Greenwich Village New York gay bar. It's very 70s, and truly a classic. Just seeing Bacall play the gay diva and sing and get flipped and flung around by the guys is worth the price alone. The quality of the video is okay, but I got it from someone who copied me a video of the entire show, which had been filmed for TV two years after it opened on Broadway. That special only aired once on network TV and has never been seen again. This is just pure fun, especially if you love stuff like this.

  • For the past 30+ years I have heard that there was video footage of Bacall's Applause.

Thanks for letting me enjoy this piece of Broadway history!

Lauren's Margo is equally as wonderful as Bette's and yet totally different.

Yet another highlight of Lauren's wonderful career.

  • @DiscoMashter It was broadcast on network TV in the '70s, with Bacall and Larry Hagman. I've seen the whole thing. It's campy and fun.

  • While I don't think much of Ms. Bacall's "singing", her dancing skills are far out!

  • @TX1961 Bacall wasn't cast for her singing ... she was cast because she was Bacall ...

  • This is, I assume, from the televsion version of the show. Do you have it complete? If so, could you PLEASE post Bacall singning "Welcome to the Theater"? I saw the show twice at the Palace Theater with Bacall, and once when Anne Baxter replaced her.

  • @edwardjames50 Let me see what I can do.

  • I love how the neon lights in the background almost spell out GAY POWERS....

  • What a great treat! I was in the Australian production, with Eve Arden and Brooks West (Eve's husband in real life). We managed to throw Eve around quite a bit in the same number. Her rendition of 'Welcome To The Theatre' was wonderful. I was side stage for it every night. Thanks!

  • I FEEL ROTTEN YET COVERED WITH ROSES!!!!! Remind me to have that on my tombstone!

  • @dynamicduonyc I remember starting to watch this as a kid. I'd loved the album, but I found this disappointing. Apart from the flat videotaped look and the fact that -- I could be misremembering this -- that they cut some of the songs out.

  • is there someway i can get this track in high def? I'm inlove...and I love hearing 'Eve' and 'Margo'

  • @buckyboywv1 My pleasure!

  • @haroldandmaud0 Actually it was not MB. It was Ron Field, who was both director and choreographer.
