Neon Neon is a joint project by Welsh musician Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals and L.A. hip-hop producer Boop Bip. The two masterminds tell the story of sports car manufacturer and visionary Jon DeLorean in their concept album, "Stainless Style," which was released in March of this year. The subject is familiar to most people due to the DMC-12. Think about it for a second. Right! It was the time machine car in "Back to the Future" with Michael J. Fox, complete with flux capacitor.
The uncompromising music of Neon Neon is as rooted in the 1980s as the streamlined sports cars built by Mr. DeLorean. The 1980s influence starts with the band's name, carries uniformly through the instruments the band uses (including a Steinberger headless bass) and doesn't end with the headbands boldly worn by its members. Truly a top-notch concept-pop-rock-electro performance.
Concert Online recorded this extremely expressive live show by Neon Neon on July 20, 2008, the last Sunday of Melt! A total of six songs from the band's concept album "Stainless Style," including the title track and the hits "Trick 4 Treat" and "Sweat Shop," are available in the form of audio and/or video downloads.
