ANYONE GROWING UP IN THE CHICAGOLAND AREA DURING THE LATE '70'S-EARLY 80'S WHO WATCHED TELEVISION REGULARLY WOULD REMEMBER THE TRIUMPHANT OPENING HORNS FROM ROGER WHITTAKER'S "THE LAST FAREWELL". THE INTRO FOR THE SONG PROVIDED THE AUDIO BACKDROP FOR VARIOUS WGN CHANNEL 9 STATION IDENTIFICATION CLIPS. MANY HAD VOICEOVERS SAYING "THIS IS WGN TELEVISION CHICAGO SERVING CHANNEL 9 VIEWERS 24 HOURS A DAY". MOST OFTEN THEY WOULD FEATURE TIME CHECKS..."WGN TELEVISION 9,CHICAGO AT 7 O'CLOCK". IF IT WASN'T SO LATE AND I WASN'T SO SLEEPY,I WOULD HAVE DONE MY OWN VOICEOVER.....OH WELL...... ANOTHER PIECE OF WARM CHILDHOOD MEMORIES-ENJOY!! (YAWN).

  • Didn't WGN have an id that used the theme from "Superman"?

  • @ebf1957 No,it was WCIU channel 26 that used the Superman theme in the station ID. It's posted here on YT.

  • @soln4suhreborn Actually, I think WGN did use part of the Superman theme also!

  • @thatkyguy I have to find that clip. I can't remember it,though-any idea what years they used it?

  • great post. hope you can find the station identification logo that went with this RW last farewell piece. the letters circled "WGN", then revolved around it.

  • @glasscitadel12 There's a site called FuzzyTV Memories, they have the actual clips of that station ID up now, they were blocked for a while.

  • The 9 with the WGN writeen into it was from the 60's.

  • Im almost in tear hearing this intro!! Born in Chicago 1960 all the best parts of my life are still in Chicago the best city in the world!!

  • Yer bloody well gonna make me cry, m8..

It was the last station identification I watched just before graduationg Northwestern & pulling up anchor - Me, Dad & Mum - for Cleveland.

    Thanx fer this, m8...

  • I could remember when 'GN station IDs (globe flash-morphing to 2-D circle 9) boasted 24/7 programming well before informercials made 24/7 ops the rule. They even had a still ID with the "Solidarność" logo.

  • @thatkyguy What Superman theme, the John Williams-composed Superman March?
