Severe multicell thunderstorm captured between Glenshane Pass and outside Knockloughrim, N. Ireland on May 9th 2011. In the passenger seat is BBC Newsline weather presenter Jackie McCann who joined me for the chase from Belfast. The multicell storm was very impressive with regular pink c-g and i-c lightning, whales mouth, and the most intense hail core I've ever drove through, roads were flooded with poor visiblity. This was a very powerful cell with bowing segments. 3 of 4 such storms I chased this day. 1000-1200 CAPE and LIs of -4 -. Best storm day in NI of 2011 so far.

  • Five storms passed over Cookstown that day, the fourth one was the most intense storm I've seen so far. The hail was unreal, and there was a flash every 3-5 seconds for about 15 minutes. Incredible.

  • @fsphil They were amazing storms weren't they, some of them were severe thunderstorms, definitely the biggest outbreak of thunderstorms across NI for many years!, hope the wait isn't long to the next one :)

  • Nice chase, and always good when you have a passenger to impress !

  • @ozthunder Thanks Michael ;)

  • I wish the road you were watching this from wasn't so busy that you can't hear the thunder or your commentary. Great video anyway. Nice structure!

  • @Krun2k I know what you mean, the traffic was so noisy, however the position was good for seeing the storm structure.

  • Ferrari at 0.49 on the back of the lorry?

  • Some Great captures there :)

  • @tylercollins1986 OT kicked off big time over much of the country, best day of storms for years,

  • It was actually a bit of a disappointment over Eglinton. Not sure whether or not it kicked off elsewhere, but there was no thunder, no lighting, and only a drizzle of rain!

Donegal (Muff direction) seem to have got the most of the rain, but the time it got towards Moville area it start to fade away.

But I do have to say I was pretty excited watching the cloud come towards me, hopefully we get a bit more action over the next couple of days.
