Why do they need to learn the tradition? Only if it is your goal to continue the tradition, or you enjoy their playing, should you feel obliged to do so. Maybe part of the originality of the "modern bands" is that they feel no need to be absorbed in the work of others. They are concerned with true, pure, personal expression.

originality....yeah......! the problem is everybody want s to be original without learning charlie parker, coltrane, miles ......he,he? i heard alot of bands playng modern....and they couldn t play good on a standard blues chords!! i don t say nothing about this musicians they are great all. Just the idea that people tend to bee original before knowing the holly grail of jazz vocabulary !! That s sad and disapoiment !!!

Norwegian jazz seems very strong these days. Does it exist only at the fringes or is it embraced more widely by Norwegian culture?
