PMQs: Low number of UK students studying maths (26Jan11)

Labour's education policy saw record amounts of students give up studying maths, and is part of the reason the UK is churning out so many morons from schools, colleges or university.

Kids don't study maths because it's fucking difficult and kids these days don't do fucking difficult.

@Sres1 It is a difficult subject, but it CAN be made easier. It all depends on the teachers, which these days don't have enthusiasm (or even the qualifications) to teach the subjects they teach.

I've got an idea: eliminate the pointless teaching of Drama, Media Studies and Religious Education at schools so we can concentrate on the useful subjects that are going to push the economy forward. When I at primary school, we were still learning our times tables at the end whereas children in Hong Kong are learning algebra at that age!

@liarpoliticians don't get me started on enthusiasm, my wife is a teacher, she's been doing it for 5 years now and she's had enough, too much false teaching, doing things to impress ofsted, teaching kids to pass exams and not teaching them life skills.

The wife has all but given up and has turned into a robot just getting through day by day, she was a great teacher at the start but rules and regs hammered it out of her.

Notice that when the lady says the word "Maths" all of the Labour MPs start immediately heckling.

The academic performance of Labour MPs is lower than that of the average MP and I suspect they hated Maths at school because they could never get their heads around it.

Sres1 you are completely right - Labour and it's leftwing supporters (teachers in this case) encouraged students to study easy courses and as a result we now have uneducated students studying stupid degrees :

Subsidise those students who choose to do degrees in Mathematics and Sciences, simple.
