An important part of outdoor furnace maintenance is controlling the quality of water in the unit. Here we will demonstrate how to perform a water test to verify that the water has the proper amount of pH and nitrites.

Before performing a water test, please carefully read and follow the precautions on the test chemical labels and the instructions printed in the Central Boiler owner's manual.

Carefully read and follow the instructions in the Water Quality and Maintenance section in the owner's manual.

It is recommended that the furnace owner keep record of the water test results... including the date, pH level, and nitrite level.

After the initial three months of operation and every six months thereafter, the pH and nitrite levels should be tested.

When we did our water test, we took a small jar with steel wool in it and filled it with the untreated water we used to fill the furnace. We then filled another jar with Treated water from the furnace. Look at what happens after just 1 week. The steel wool is already showing rust! So remember... Controlling the water quality in your outdoor furnace is an important part of outdoor furnace maintenance.
