  • 7:30- Actor Bill Kerr has three times played real-life Australian military figures. He was bomber pilot Micky Martin in The Dambusters (1955) and General Chauvel in The Lighthorsemen (1986).

  • Good series but Martin's teeth are waaayyy too clean and white for the trenches in 1918.

  • @dinukaperera2809 Yes, and a tragic coincidence is that the actor at 0:39 playing the role of Elliot- New Zealander Francis Bell- also later took his own life in 1994.

  • @stormwell If anything I'd probably say the Americans helped end the war sooner than what might have been possible.

  • @dthdc4 My apologies here, but personally I wouldn't say that the war could never be won.

I admit the US' entry into the war was a godsend for the Allies; Germany was under blockade and was facing manpower issues like everyone else. Activities on the Eastern Front didn't just end, about a million German troops were still tied up occupying captured Russian territory and a peace with the Bolsheviks wasn't settled until March 1918.

  • @stormwell The fact remains that without active US participation in WW1, the war would never have been won. Russia was torn by revolution. The French were in mutiny. The Italians were reeling at Caporetto. The British and Empire troops took heavy casualties at the Somme and Passchendaele. When the USA came in, thanks to the German decision to sink all ships on sight, it was a godsend to the Allies.

  • @stormwell (Damn limited space!)

20 years before anyone else thought about it.

Though my point about Monty was that there was more than one non-American who has commended US troops. ;)

In all honesty I rate General William 'Bill' Slim much higher than I do Monty.

  • @dthdc4 Think the issue with WW1 is that its generally viewed that the US 'joined the party late' after the Somme and Verden had finished so their efforts tend to get overlooked. I mean my dad went to grammar school (high end of the British state education system) and even he's barely aware of what American troops got up to during the Great War. If the war lasted into 1919 then it would've been a different story, the US Army was planning to use airborne troops in 1919.

  • @stormwell Yes I will. Whenever I see what I perceive as attempts to minimize or downplay the role of my countrymen in wartime, especially in the 2 World Wars. I will answer and defend with all at my disposal. Just ask those Canadians and some Britons who tried to make us believe that they could have won WW1 without USA help and yet at that time tried to seize control of our armies. LMAO!!!

  • @dthdc4 You're gonna be a sticker on this aren't you? :P
