@mreunome According to the Haines bio, "Wisecracker" by Bill Mann, he did more than that...in the mens room of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in 1928 or so. And having done so, things were never the same between them. Funny, too, in that Haines' BFF was Joan Crawford and she had an on and off affair with Gable for years. One wonders what any of them said about each other.

@acidqueen69 I wonder if he tore off Clark Gable's clothes too, lol.

@CastingCrowns100 - a correction, please. . .Jack Benny started his radio show in 1932, three years after this film. It did take him a while to develop the famous "Jack Benny" character, true, but by 1948, it had been in place for at least a decade.

Jack Benny at this point in his career was not yet playing the "Jack Benny" character that he became famous for. In fact, Jack didn't start playing that character until he had hosted his own radio show for about 4 or 5 years. 19 years after this movie was made, Jack made an appearance on Fred Allen's radio show called "King For a Day" where the climax was a similar scene where Jack's clothes were ripped from his back. It's one of the highlights of old time radio comedy, well worth hunting down.

I met my wife while she was acting in a play about William Haines called The Tailor Made Man.

So was this just a ploy to get started on undressing Jack? if so, what came later, when William and Jack could be alone together, hmmm?
"Just one big happy family in Hollywood"...
