Where's the scientific research on the territorial behavior of a trout? The more I listen to this the dumber it sounds! A Brown that is big enough is gonna eat anything he can - not chase it away! Geeeezzzzzz!
The reality is - as Dec Hogan knows from watching hundreds of hours of Spey fisherman - is that there are a lot of rejections - more than most anglers realize ! The fish attacks and retreats because the presentation is not convincing perhaps!
Guys do the same thing on the South Platte during the spawhning run when the Rainbows move up out of the resavouir. Everybody out west knows about it.The self righteous attitude from guys out west is a joke!
All pandromous or anadromous fish are targeted in natal streams - in some stage of spawning! Everyone has to decide for themselves how far way from gravel a fish has to be before they can feel ok about hooking it!
In the Great Lake all fly fishing revolves around the spawning run. All fish in the rivers are in some stage of spawning post or pre spawn. Steelhead enter the rivers in fall and stay all winter in some cases!
As long as you don't rip them off the gravel I have no problem with it! Big browns fighting near gravel will take a big fly aggressively. We release all fish - no harm done! My biggest fish this year was almost 30 pounds!
How many browns over twenty pounds have you caught? I've caught more than I can remember- all lake runs - all caught on sinking streamers - sculpins and ESL's!
I've caught big browns out west too - when they are moving up out of the reservoirs in the fall - using the same techniques! Never caught one anywhere near the surface!
People that assert absolutes and think they know something can kiss my ass!
I agree Bozone, that guy is just another Knowitall who probably uses off the shelf flyfishing magazines as bibles, has to have waders and orvis hat, no matter what size the creek, and definatly a pocketfull of strike indicators, you know the type. obviously better off on the golf course.
I just whis I had some of that scenery over here in the
Netherlands....but alas, we have to do with flat country , no running water and too many people calling us fly-fishermen animals for afflicting animal-cruelty...
Dude you couldn't pack Kelly Galloups fish pole to the river for him. He's forgot more about fishing than most of us will ever know. Just because you can't wrap your head around what he is telling you is no reason to name call. I'd like to see your fly fishing credentials. God ignorant people piss me off.
I love it when guys make absolute statements about what a fish is thinking - behavior!
The minute a guy does that he is a bullshitter!
What stimulates a fish to strike? The stimulus is probably instinctive . That leaves a lot to discussion , but I'm not going to assert any absolutes about predatory or territorial responses.
Having said that; I have only seen territorial behaviour in spawning fish defending gravel.
These rejections may be perceived as territorial strikes - if they are even seen - but it's probably just the fish saying he ain't buyin it! Ha!
I would not assert this as an absolute - HOWEVER, IT MAKES MORE SENSE!!
