"Earth's Children: I - Ayla" Op. 2 No. 1 by Stephen Clothier (14)
Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
Hamish McKeich
I wrote this one for the Trust's Secondary Composer's Competition back in 2008.
For this piece, I was inspired by a series of books by Jean Auel, "Earth's Children". This movement depicts the character and actions of Ayla, a Homo sapiens child adopted into a clan of Neanderthals. I suppose it could be described as a 'tone poem', as I attempted to evoke Ayla's character as well as actions taken by her during the course of the first novel, "Clan of the Cave Bear".
If you want to see how my composition style improved (maybe?!) since then, check out the video "Ascent of the Blessed (Original Composition)" that I posted earlier.
