This is a demonstration on the hand drill method of starting a fire. The spindle is goldenrod. The baseboard is cottonwood. I used Juniper bark as the nest.

  • The baseboard is cottonwood and the spindle is goldenrod. Many other woods work. Most of the weeds you see off the side off roads work well when dry and used in conjunction with a tree wood of medium hardness. One tip if you are struggling is a little honey on your hands, but not too much. This will allow you to apply more downward pressure while spinning. You could also use sap from a milk weed or any other natural sticky substance. But if you use too much you will rip your hands up.
