While Jesus Christ is central to Paul's theology and
writing, the letters in the New Testament are a different
type of literature than the gospels. They have their own
rhetorical features, and it is not always clear how
"someone else's mail" is supposed to address us. In this
session Luther Seminary Professor Mary Hinkle Shore
will bring together "then" and "now" by looking at the
basic elements of an ancient letter, and at the ways Paul
uses those elements along with what he knows about
God's work in Christ to exhort, instruct, and comfort the
churches to which he writes.
