The Alberta Tar Sands are one of the most environmentally destructive industrial projects in world history - and the Royal Bank of Canada is their biggest funder. Join Rainforest Action Network's campaign against RBC, and help pull the plug on Tar Sands financing!

In the Canadian Boreal forest just downstream of the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains are the Canadian tar sands. The region contains some 2 trillion barrels of oil, but getting to it will mean destroying an area larger than the state of Florida.

The environmental and human impacts of this project are disastrous. Toxic lakes, created by the Tar Sands production process, leak 11 million liters of contaminated water into the environment every day. And levels of arsenic 33 times the acceptable level have been found in moose in Northern Alberta - and moose are a food staple for many First Nations communities in the region.

The Tar Sands have already caused massive destruction - but they're translating into massive profits for Royal Bank of Canada. Oil companies plan to invest at least $100 billion into Tar Sands production by 2020. And RBC is getting a huge chunk of this money: they've loaned a total of $45 billion to Tar Sands companies in the last five years, far more than any other bank.
