[short version posted to get to the point a bit quicker.]
Helmet video camera used: ION Air Pro HD.
On Friday, 11 January 2013, the driver of a black 2009--2013 Dodge Journey SUV, Ontario BMSA-688, races to rush past a cyclist on a two-lane side street, as both are approaching a red traffic light. Cyclist, unaware there was an SUV behind her, was adhering to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act rule for two-lane roads (at least 1m from the right-most barrier, such as a cub or a wall of parked cars), as explained in §147 and §148.
Despite extremely limited passing room, driver insisted on rushing ahead (and did so) with no initial comment from me. As I rode by the now-stopped Journey, the driver gave me a disgusted expression and said something inaudible.
After I stopped, I asked the driver if she was in a rush and mentioned the HTA, §147. She spoke further words, also inaudible. She then gesticulated for me to "get in front of her car" (because as a vehicle, I guess she believed I'm not permitted to ride on her right and pass her in so doing).
So I dismounted my bike, moved it to in front of her car (and behind the next car). I was re-mounting my saddle when she opened her driver door to get out to confront me.
Her volume and aggression speaks for itself.
She threatened to assault me by punching me in the face, she screamed that she "CAN'T GO AND HIT SOMEONE ELSE BECAUSE YOU'RE RIDING IN FRONT OF MY CAR! [sic] I HAVE A KID IN THE CAR! DON'T ACT STUPID WITH ME! I WILL PUNCH YOU IN THE FUCKING FACE!"
When telling her that this was on video camera, she said, "I DON'T CARE! YOU CAN'T BE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD! MOVE A LITTLE OVER!"
She did not like being talked over, either, when I finally raised my voice over hers to ask, "DO YOU KNOW THE HIGHWAY TRAFFIC ACT?"
She replied: "DON'T YELL AT ME! DO I LOOK FUCKING DEAF TO YOU, YOU FUCKING BITCH?! I'M NOT FUCKING DEAF!"
I thought she might have been hard of hearing. My bad.
Aside from calling me a "fucking bitch" and threatening to punch me in the face, no additional threats emerged. She asserted that her "car" "is way bigger than yours". So I reminded her that her SUV is a weapon.
A car behind her honked to get her moving once the light turned green. I admit to mini-trolling when I shouted back to her to "hurry it up!" But beyond that, nothing further.
She said that she would be very happy if this video was uploaded to YouTube. Unrepentant, aggressive driver? Here's your request and dedication. :)
