This is my third 1 minute flight. The instructor is in the tunnel to make sure you don't crash and to help you learn. My goal on this flight was to try to go up high in the tunnel. It's 20' to 30' high and you need a combination of surface area (flattening your body) and wind speed to get high. There is a "driver" running the fans which respond instantaneously to their input. The driver was keeping the air volume down a bit keeping me somewhat low. Staying stable, turning and controlling your height are the basic skills. I saw instructors and flyers (that's how they spell it) that were amazing. They complimented my technique and told me I was doing very, very well for a first timer. This tunnel is the first one made out of plexiglass. It is amazing to watch and hard to imagine a tunnel NOT made out of plexiglass. Flying is pretty amazing. It is akin for me to scuba diving but without all of the gear. You typically fly for one minute at a time which sounds short, but isn't. I was breathing hard after this flight. And, most skydive freefalls last less than a minute. What's really different is (besides the lack of a parachute) is the precision required to stay within a column of air like this. Skydivers don't realize they are flying all over the place. You can't do that here. The landing is also a lot less dangerous or painful!
