It sounds kind of goofy that way, I agree. But i talso sounds wrong to only have two. Ma-i-ne is kind of what I was aiming for. But you just pronounce it like how you pronounce the word "main", so if you can do that, congratulations, you've mastered the name of a state!

you said you were from the west? which state? you said states like "california" strangely- you emphasized the "ca-LEE-for-nia" more than I've heard it emphasized before (I say "cal-IH-for-nia)... but I'm from Ohio, which is mid-west (ish) and I'm not sure which state you're from-- that was an interesting difference

I'm from Washington state. You are not alone in how you say it. You definitely hear both versions around here, depending on who you talk to.
