One of many feedings today (December 4, 2006)at the Panamerican Conservation Association in Panama. www.panamericancon.org.
This little guy was found by a concerned citizen who thought that it had been abandoned by its parents when actually, they were most likely nearby, hunting insects to feed the little guy. This is a common mistake caring people make when they see what appears to be a helpless baby bird. Usually it's best to leave them alone and let the parents care for them. www.panamerican.org

I just found one of these baby nighthawks by my mother's garage this morning, I thought It was near dead but when I got back from school, It was still alive.
So we took it to the zoo. It also had a broken wing. =( I'm glad My mother and I were able to get it to a rehabilitation center in time. They're so cute!

Do they eat insects in the wild?

Nighthawks aren't hawks, they're members pf the Caprimulgidae family, they're nightjars, a very unique kind of birds.

It's ILLEGAL to own nighthawks, they're wild animals, you do know that right?
If it was an abandoned fledgling in need of help, then you need to take it to a nature center nearby.
If you have a wildlife rehabilitation license, or there isn't a nature center that's very nearby, then you can take care of it until you find a suitable place to release it. Make sure it can survive in the wild before you release it.
Until then, feed it small insects, like what she was doing.

cute! I live in downtown Montreal and I kept hearing strange bird calls circling above my aprtment late at night. I finally spotted it and it turned out to be a Nighthawk. there are a bunch of them nesting on top of the buildings right here
