What kind of weapon he fired nor whether or not he hit any enemy air crafts is not what makes Dorie Miller a HERO. What makes him a HERO is the fact that he, a cook in the ship's galley, picked up a weapon that he had not been trained to use to defend his ship, his crew mates and his Country; with no thought of his own LIFE! R.I.P. VALIANT Solider!!!

If Miller had carried ammunition as he was ordered to the gun wouldn't have run out of ammo. The gun he grabbed was a 20mm Oerlikon cannon. He emptied the drum without hitting anything.

The story they like to tell our children now it that he manned a 50 cal which does not require the level of training that the Oerlikon does, AND THAT HE SHOT DOWN FOUR OF THE TWENTY NINE PLANES THE JAPANESE LOST THAT DAY!

Perhaps his voice would have sounded like that if he had lived another ten years or so, but I can't imagine a 22 year old sounding like that. He was an amazing young man!

@radargod1977 i guess is truth, but not only your country is in a craphole... this year mexico celebrates its 200 years of "freedoom" and if Miguel Hidalgo were alive he would kill himself. I think is a global thing... and yes.. a year ago i was a litle bit less mature than today... i guess i get exited when i see this video, becoue well.. sometimes people like to see the good side of the things. Makes me proud to be a Sailor!!! I have stared in the mouth of Death and came home safe. I have pulled Shipmates to safety and slapped them on the back saying they owe me a beer. Do I collect..? @yamapresta And now our county is in a craphole. I blame Former President Clinton myself (housing loans) but, who knows, maybe if I work hard enough, I can get everyone out of debt.
