Unit 731 (731 部隊, Nana-san-ichi butai?) was a covert biological and chemical warfare research and development unit of the Imperial Japanese Army that undertook lethal human experimentation during the Second Sino-Japanese War (19371945) and World War II. It was responsible for some of the most notorious war crimes carried out by Japanese personnel. Officially known by the Imperial Japanese Army as the Kempeitai Political Department and Epidemic Prevention Research Laboratory, it was initially set up under the Kempeitai military police of the Empire of Japan to develop weapons of mass destruction for potential use against Chinese, and possibly Soviet forces.

731部隊（ななさんいちぶたい）とは大日本帝国陸軍の関東軍防疫給水部本部の事。関東軍管轄区域内の防疫・給水業務を行うことを目的に設置された。細菌・化学戦研究の為­に生体解剖などを行ったとされている。初代部隊長の石井四郎（1892年 - 1959年、陸軍軍医中将）に因んで石井部隊とも呼ばれる。

731部隊は日中戦争から太平洋戦争中にかけて発足した旧日本軍のBC戦(生物・化学兵器)研究機関「軍医学校防疫研究室」の下部組織である。

当時からその特殊性よって機密性が非常に高い組織であった事、また終戦後のアメリカ軍との取引により関係者の多くが研究成果を引き渡す事を条件に罪不問に付され、戦後医学­界の中枢を構成した経緯などから情報が不足し、実態は不明のままであった。近年になり徐々に情報が発掘され、ある程度の全貌が判明してきている。

従来、731部隊は旧軍の細菌戦部隊の中核研究機関のように言われてきたがこれを誤りとする研究者も存在する。この主張によるとBC戦の研究組織の中枢は当時新宿にあった­陸軍軍医学校防疫研究室（または陸軍防疫給水部、この組織は陸軍軍医学校と陸軍参謀本部の両方に指揮系統を有しており、前者による呼称が研究室、後者による呼称が防疫給水­部）である。ここを中核として、当時の旧軍展開地域各所に設置された各部隊（平房の大陸本部、北京の甲1855部隊、南京の栄1644部隊、広東の波8604部隊、シンガ­ポールの岡9420部隊など）に指令が出され、さらに国内大学医学部のバックアップの元で広大なネットワークを構成してBC戦術の組織的な研究・開発を推進していた。

731部隊はそれらの部隊中で最大級の設備を有してはいたが、その中心ではなく実験・検証施設であったにすぎない。731部隊は表向き日中戦争時の1941年に各種流行性­伝染病予防と兵員用の飲料水の水質浄化を目的として、関東軍が建国した満州国のハルピンに配備された。731部隊で実施された内容は各部隊の中でも特殊なものであり、人間­の生体を用いて非倫理的な実験が行われたと言われている。

陸軍参謀本部指揮下の『満州第731部隊』は関東軍防疫給水部本部を表す通称号であり、秘匿名の性格を持っていた。各支部などをまとめた関東軍防疫給水部は｢満州第659­部隊｣と称した。

731部队伪装成一个水净化部队。731部队把基地建在中国东北哈尔滨附近的平房区，这一区域当时是傀儡政权满洲国的一部分。一些研究者认为超过10，000名中国人、朝­鲜人和联军战俘在731部队的试验中被害，但是对于数量的多少还存在争议。

731部队行径只是大日本帝国陆军在占领满洲期间（从1931年到第二次世界大战结束的1945年）犯下的许多战争罪行之一，在这期间，1500万中国人、朝鲜人、菲律宾­人、印度尼西亚人、缅甸人的平民、太平洋岛上居民和联军俘虏被杀害。

The Japanese exhibited forbearance and patience and did everything possible to avoid aggravating the situation.
