I think they're just playing, cus if he had hit the dolphin it would have bitten him or knocked him into next week. Don't forget, dolphins aren't dogs, they're pretty agressive and are huge, I mean, would you hit a horse?? He'd let you have it back!

legend7293 is right. He blew the whistle three times to reward the animal.
First time when the dolphin pushed him to edge of pool, second and third time to reward after the animal gave him a "highfive" handslap after the trainers signal.
Do not assume things.... The whistleblowing is always to show the animal that it did a thing correct.

that is sick... everyone knows that he was hitting that dolphin cuz the dolphin pushed him around a little bit.. everyone should watch blood dolphins... catching animals for this purpose is sad and wrong on every level!!! that guy should be tied to the BOTTOM of that pool...

@Artistgirl135 ya he was giving him a signal and it was for a high five. they love highfives and pekaboo:)

He wasn't hurting the dolphin because if he was then the dolphin would probably hurt the trainer back. If these animals truly hated being taken care of woderfully than we would know people. Believe me

It looks like a learned behavior, a pec/hand slap, besides, when the dolphin did it you could hear the trainer blow the whistle, which is a sign that the behaviour was successfully carried out.

shit, the more i watch this i think the guy was angrily hitting the dolphin, err kind of sickening. humans suck, they destroy the ocean, eat the dolphins, now they beat them in a cage, hold them in the cage till they die. shit people are terrible, it doesnt have to be like this. my teacher said that they are actually smarter than humans their fins are the only limitations for them not to have mechanical abilities like humans.

He hit the dolphin! How stupid!

I can't say as to whether or not I agree with his actions. It looks like a learned behavior, the slapping of the pectoral fin. The dolphin shot his fin up each time. So, perhaps it was abuse, or some sort of screwed up reward.
Hey, I never said I agree with these poor, beautiful animals being caught and stuck in tiny pools for the rest of their lives only to serve as entertainment for tourists. I only happened to stop by a restaurant here in Cancun with a view of the trainers "playing" with the dolphins. They were basically letting them swim around freely right before they did a show where people get to swim with them.
