@tkwtg Agreed however, regardless of whether you call it an explosion or not, its a massive amount of time. For a billion years life was single-celled. Once it found its way past that a wide range of possibilities became reality.

It took only a handful of millions of years for man and apes to diverge from a common ancestor.

Only 65 million years or so for every mammal in existence today to diverge from that first one who stole eggs from dinosaurs.

More complexity means more options.

@corthew yes but 50 million years in geological time, especially considering billions of years with 0 progress, in that perspective "explosion" does seem like an accurate term. also consider the diversity of the newly appearing life.
