@MyMojosSoDope The smoke monster resembled a creature in Egyptian mythology (Ammit), tied with the scales of justice (which also involves Anubis) - all to do with being judged and punished. It's all synonymous.
It would have also been logical for the Egyptians on the island to just incorporate the smoke monster into their mythology.

I never understood why Ben decided to go before the Smoke Monster in the first place. Why did he think the Smoke Monster was some kind of judge? And whats up with the picture of the Smoke Monster and the Egyptian god?

This has become one of my favorite scenes in the series. Just an awesome scene, especially "It's all my fault..." and then Alex says "I know." and slams him into the pillar. That was the last thing I expected, lol.
And ya just gotta love that smoke monster.

Yeah it's obvious that the smoke monster is man in black.
The reincarnated version of Alex is smokey, which is Locke, who are basically saying the same thing. Follow Locke and listen to him. Plus the smoke monster is black, man in black, eh? eh? Alex threatening Ben is just man in black threatening him.
