  • when we did this in class last year, we carried out the reaction in a metal container (that had a hole at the bottom of it) and we placed a large beaker of water underneath it so that (if all things go well) the lump of iron that is mad, falls through the hole into the water. Of course, this way made it safer for the students to carry out this reaction without getting hurt as the 'hot' iron would cool rapidly due to the water and nobody's fingers would be chard!!! ^_^

    use CuO instead of Fe2O3 and mix with a fine mesh aluminium powder.

    Use the ratios 3:1 Cuo:Al it burns like flash powder
