Tibetan Dances - Pilgrimage(朝圣) 2/2

"Dynamic Yunnan" is filled with songs and dances that celebrate the sun, the moon and the region's folk legends. Ms. Yang said part of the show's popularity stems from its authenticity: nearly all the performers are young people from Yunnan's ethnic minorities. And like her, few have had formal training.

One young man, she said, was selected after she heard him crying out for his runaway cow. A young girl was chosen after pleading for the opportunity to dance so she could earn the $48 it would cost her family to buy a cow. Ms. Yang said the girl's story moved her to tears. "I picked her even though I thought she was too short," Ms. Yang said, laughing. "But she works hard. I can always hear her singing in the back. She puts all her energy into it. You see, this show is nothing but real life."

To prepare the show, Ms. Yang said she spent more than a year traveling to remote villages in her native Yunnan, studying local dances, recording disappearing folk songs and recruiting dozens of young people from ethnic minority groups. Yunnan is China's most ethnically diverse province.

Many of the villages she visited were wedged between mountains and seemingly lost to the modern world. There she encountered the folk rhythms of farmers and villagers who seemed to have a natural aptitude for song and dance.

"In these villages, people have songs and dances for every event - when they're happy, at harvest time, when they're getting married or mourning," she said. "It's not a choice, it's a lifestyle."

　　藏族舞 Tibetan Dances

　　大量地选用了藏文化的许多舞蹈元素去表现人性之美。服饰以藏族牧区的袍服为主，肥大、宽敞，以黑、红、黄三个基调为主，白天脱去 一袖或二袖，束于腰间，以适应"作息一袭衣"的气候特点。农村妇女多穿一件色彩艳丽的内衫，外罩宽大氆氇坎肩，歌舞时舞动双袖， 飘洒多姿。藏族人常佩戴护身符盒，戴镶珊瑚、宝石的戒指，这样可以吉祥如意。

　　玛尼石 Praying Stone

　　据专家研究，与西藏古老的白石崇拜、生肖崇拜的习俗有关，宗教的发展又赋予它们多种意义。玛尼石上刻有六字箴言，有的还刻有佛经 、咒语及佛像，是藏民族供奉的圣物。玛尼石面有的涂以红、蓝、黄、白等天然颜料，多年不会褪色，这种群众性石刻艺术，体现出非凡 的造型能力。

　　转经筒

　　筒上刻有经文和有象征意义的图案(一般刻六字箴言)。筒内置有经文一卷，大型转经筒置于祭坛两侧，微型转经筒为藏民诵经时所用， 边诵边转动以达到诵经时身、口、意完美一致之境界。

　　童谣：群峰之中有一座金色的山，金色的山里有一个金色的湖，金色的湖上有一棵金色的树，金色的树上有一只金色的鸟，金色的鸟唱着 一支吉祥的歌......

I guess it is best to see it for what it is .....just a bit of show business and eye candy.... Like Riverdance or CATS The Phantom of the Opera...is a nice piece of commercial entertainment.... Just one writer/directors idea of a good thematic show...Nothing to do with politics or deep human issues ...right?....keep the actors and dancers in a job....employment is a good thing !

or is this a Chinese dance theater creating an artistic presentation that incorporates Tibetan cultural elements?

Art of course is Art and Culture...... is.... Tradition and this requires a sensitivity to authenticity of history and language. Thanks for posting it up. It's good entertainment. :)

You need to know what is modernization and what is sinonization. You must believe Tibetan should never sing pop music or dance in a modern way, even the songs and dance originate from or are inspired by Tibetan culture. By the way, the director of the show is Yang Liping, who is also a performer in this show. She is Bai Chinese, not Han.

What is so amazing about this distorted tibetan dance? This is chinese version of tibetan dance. Sinonising our culture in order to illiminate it just like what they did to mongolians culture.
