"The Smoothies" were a "hot" vocal group, consisting of two brothers, Charlie and Little Ryan. Early on, they added a girl to their act, and called her "Babs". Several "Babs" came and went over the course of the act. This very rare soundie is from about 1940, and features the Hal Kemp Orchestra.

  • Charlie Ryan (on the right) was my agent back in the 1980's. What a great guy. The Smoothies are wonderful.

  • The Great SMOOTHIES !

  • Another of those great parody treatments. And great sync. My only complaint about them is not being to hear the lead clearly. The Andrews Sisters, you could always hear the tune.

  • This is a rare look at a legendary vocal group during the swing & Big Band era. The woman vocalist should be Arlene 'Babs' Johnson. She matches the photo on the cover of the sheet music for 'Playmates' released in 1940.

Researchers: The trio performed on the 'Time To Shine' radio show with the Hal Kemp Orchestra. Alrene is reported to have married Del Sandberg in 1940 and later had 3 children & she is on most of the Bluebird releases.

Thank you for contributing to global goodwill & education!
