I had an old PC Case w/h a 350w power supply, and some extra cables lying around (Sold former hackintosh parts Core Duo, not the PC...just the parts separately). So I decide to try and build a cheap Hackintosh as my main editing work station (again), because my 2.26GHz, 8GB Ram white unibody macbook was feeling underpowered. Here is the shopping list I made and actually bought:

MotherBoard: Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3 6,980 Japanese Yen
CPU: Intel i5-2500 3.3GHz (4 cores) 16,805 Japanese Yen
GraphicsCard: Nvidia GeForce 9600GT 512MB 4,980 Japanese Yen
Ram: 8GB DDR3 1333Q (4GB x 2) 3,709 Japanese Yen

TOTAL COST: 32,454 Japanese Yen!!! Less than $400 4Core Mac!!!

About some of the Software I used in the Video:

-GeekTool: Desktop customization (weather, clock, itunes info, cal)
-BetterTouchTool: Customize Magic Mouse for multitouch, and Resize Windows in hot corners
-Parallels Desktop 6: Running Ubuntu 10.10 (2 cores, 2GB Ram, compiz) & Windows 8 Preview Developers version

This 10 minute video was exported and rendered in HD (iMovie11) in less than 10 mins!

All this couldn't be possible if it weren't for TonyMacX86 blog!!! Thanks for their hard work and great support. If you are building a Hackintosh, then go there and make a shopping list based on their recommended parts only! It was breeze, installed finished in 20 Minutes, and had it updated to 10.6.8 in 35 minutes later!!! $400 MacPro!!!

  • Sorry about the app store not logging in. Now my video is outdated. I just updated to 10.7.2 and everything is still working including sleep. I had a problem logging into iCloud (using apple store account) but I fix it by reinstalling & updating Chimera.

The clock desktop is a free App called "GeekTool" (Appstore) or Google it and google "geek tool scripts" you'll find a lot of info. The limit to what you can add in your desktop is limitless... Weather, TO DO list, Cal, Drives status, etc.
