Translation

Alone does your friend wander
in the Spring garden,
mildly encircled by magic light
that quivers through swaying, blossoming boughs,
Adelaide!

In the mirroring stream,
in the snow of the Alps,
in the dying day's golden clouds,
in the fields of stars,
your image shines,
Adelaide!

Evening breezes whisper
in the tender leaves,
silver bells of May
chime in the grass,
waves murmur and nightingales pipe:
Adelaide!

One day, o wonder!
from my grave will sprout
a flower from the ashes of my heart;
and clearly on every purple leaf will gleam:
Adelaide!

  • Adelaide's a cool name. (I'm not an Adelaide btw. lol) But I didn't know until recently that Beethoven even wrote art songs. he's so famous for his symphonies.

  • Sometimes I find Dieskau a bit over technically perfect, but this interpretation is really wunderbar. Very sweet and gentle. Makes the song shine brightly.

  • My names Adelaide!!:)

  • who is the singer?

  • esto formará parte de el sound track de algo que escribiré, ¡¡está perfecto!! el nombre es importante en mi historia y también la letra ¡¡gacias a Dios que la encuentro!!

  • The singer is Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, I know this recording from a 10 CD collection I recently bought.

  • Thumbs up if listening to the metal band Adelaide brought you here...

  • @orphyborphy Urm there was a biography of beethoven and towards the end when it told me that it was on Beethoven's deathbed that he requested his best friends to sing this piece for him.
