Occupy Naniamo Day One

Occupy Nanaimo protest draws people from all walks of life

Nearly 500 head downtown to join a global movement protesting the disparity between the rich and the poor

Nearly five hundred people flooded into Diana Krall Plaza in downtown Nanaimo on Saturday morning to join a global movement protesting the disparity between the rich and the poor.

Occupy Nanaimo drew protesters from all walks of life and provided a forum for many to air a diversity of grievances. The peaceful rally included social activists, union members and politicians.

Organizers haven't decided if they will be able to remain at the plaza for an extended period, as has been the case in other rallies, but they are certain that their message will be heard by joining cities across the world in protest.

The occupy movement has been criticized for having no single, easily-defined message behind the rallies, notably the Wall Street protest in New York City, but organizer Matthew Orrick dismissed it.

"In my perspective, the media asking for us to give them one message, one voice, is wrong because it may have started with people asking for the end of corporate greed, but at this point it has raged across 71 countries in the world," Orrick said.

"When you reach across 71 countries in the world you don't have one issue. You don't have one voice. It's everything."

Orrick addressed the crowd to bring some sense of order to the gathering.

His complaints are the same that have registered at protests around the world. People are losing their homes and their jobs while a rich minority prosper by immoral, and sometimes illegal, means.

"It's not just in the big cities, it's not just in the United States, it's everywhere. it's right here in our home town so let's stand together and let our voices be heard," he said.

"We can't stop and we're not going to stop and this is a solemn vow that Nanaimo will stay occupied until this is over," he said.

He then turned it over to the crowd. A laundry list of issues were discussed as each member took their spot on the table. The crowd heard about everything from smart meters to quotes from books criticizing unchecked capitalism.

Visibly nervous, Orrick admitted he could never have foreseen the turnout when he was busy organizing the rally weeks earlier.

"Did I expect this? Maybe not. Maybe not so early on in the day, but I truly did believe in Nanaimo. This is unreal to me, the smile can't leave my face."

Jim Sadlemyer, the Vancouver Island member-at-large for the Canadian Auto Workers union local 114, waved the CAW flag at the protest.

The CAW is one of many unions throwing their weight behind the occupy movements. CUPE, the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers of Canada and the British Columbia Federation of Labour have all jumped on board.

Sadlemyer said that the heart of the movement is something that directly aligns with the CAW's efforts.

"I think it's a message that we've been trying to get out for years that the gap between the haves and the have-nots is growing and it's the corporate greed that really needs to be addressed," said Sadlemyer.

  • borrow exclusively from the Bank of Canada, which is unlikely to happen, seeing as European interests control the Canadian economy. Banks aren't the problem really, neither is money. It's borrowing from private banks, who operate exclusively for profit, made off the government tit.

  • In Canada we have a Central Bank called, the Bank of Canada, which means, the Government can borrow money from it at a lower interest rate, than if they borrow from private banking firms(such as the ROYAL bank, the Canadian IMPERIAL Bank of Commerce, and the Toronto DOMINION bank ~ see a pattern there?) Another benefit to that relationship would see profits made from interest payments to the Bank of Canada, would go back into the Canadian economy.

Pressure needs to be put on politicians to
