War

This is a movie I did for my Handmade Film class using a 16mm found footage. I scratched onto each frame of the footage to create this movie.

The found footage is an art instruction video that is so obviously geared towards the female audience. The artist and narrator are both women (although, they might be the same person), the image that is painted is a flower, the image that is scratched into the wax painting is also a flower, and the over all tint of the footage is pink. So for my movie, I created a piece that examines these stereotypical images and how they represent masculinity and femininity.

We begin with the astrological signs for male and female, which turn into the respective bathroom signs. Then an image of a basketball (M = male) bounces up and down, but disappears off-screen into a pair of breasts (F). The breasts gets blown up by a flying bullets from a gun (M) that appears onscreen after the incident. The gun is stomped upon by a high-heeled shoe (F), but the shoe turns into a beer bottle (M) being filled with beer. The beer quickly morphs into a tampon (F), which pulls up a hammer (M) that will soon be eaten by a wooden spoon (F). The spoon turns into a phallus (M) which then turns into a pair of sensual lips (F), but the lips have fangs and chase after the camera lens. The segment ends with a couple coming together, forming a heart, but soon leading to destruction.

The media portrays women in a negative light. They are either the femme fatale, the supermom, or the nasty corporate climber. Whereas, men are portrayed with symbols of strength and glory. So my goal with this movie is to have the audience question that representation of masculinity and femininity in the media.
