On January 12, 2010 the Government Accountability Project (GAP) hosted a round-table conversation at Busboys and Poets in Washington D.C. concerning recent evidence from whistleblowers showing that racial discrimination remains a challenge at the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Participants included Bea Edwards, GAP International Program Director; Tina Tinde, Diversity Advisor at the IDB; Andrew Morrison, Chief of Gender and Diversity Unit, IDB; Gilberto Amaya, D.C. Representative of the Central American Black Organization (CABO, ONECA); Vince McElhinny, Manager of the Bank Information Centers BICECA project; Joia Nuri, Chief of Staff at TransAfrica Forum; Carlos Quesada, Latin America Regional Program Director at Global Rights; Wamara Mwine, White House Correspondent for Politics in Color and author of a National Examiner Report about racial discrimination at the World Bank; and Aisha Brown, Founder and CEO, Global Awareness Project Consulting.
The participants and audience considered the impact of discrimination in international development agencies and proposed steps the Banks can take to improve their diversity profiles and address the socioeconomic problems that affect the Afro-descendant population. A summary of the event is available on GAPs blog at www.whistleblower.typepad.com.
