James Joyce's Ulysses -The Ballad of Joking Jesus

"The Song of the Cheerful (but slightly Sarcastic) Jesus" is a poem by Oliver St. John Gogarty. It was written around Christmas of 1904 and was later published in modified form as "The Ballad of Joking Jesus" in James Joyce's Ulysses.

The Ballad of Joking Jesus

I'm the queerest young fellow that ever you heard.
My mother's a jew, my father's a bird.
With Joseph the joiner I cannot agree,
So here's to disciples and Calvary.

If anyone thinks that I amn't divine

25. old. „Az anyám zsidó, az apám rigó,/ Elsők közt én a felkent strigó(...)", a Malachi Mulligan által előadott blaszfém éneket Stephen „Jézus, a Jolly Joker balladája"-ként azonosítja. Az eredeti szövegben „The ballad of Joking Jesus" hangzik el (22. old) -- maga a vers pedig, kisebb változtatásokkal ugyan, de majdnem pontosan idézi Oliver St. John Gogarty (1878--1957) The Song of Sarcastic (but Slightly Cheerful) Jesus, más források szerint The Ballad of Japing Jesus című versét. A költemény 1904-05 között szájhagyomány útján és kéziratban terjedt Dublinban. Malachi Mulligan figurájában Oliver St. John Gogarty vonásait jelenítette meg Joyce.
