What might it feel like to truly be one with the hungry? This is a slideshow based on the THINKfast activity "Living on Less Than a Dollar a Day", as inspired by the diary of Carolina Maria de Jesus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolina_Maria_De_Jesus).

Great treatment of world hunger and poverty. I have spent most of my life struggling to change the world and feel like I have failed. There is so much work to do and not enough people to do it. I read Child of the Dark in 1960, when it was still blacklisted in the USA. My aunt, a Catholic Missionary Nun in the Amazon gave me a copy and it changed my life - my family was poverty stricken here in the USA at the time and tthe book gave me hope and a purpose in life.

The power of this black woman with only 2 yrs of schooling. She signed a senators copy of her book, I hope you give the poor people wat they want and stop putting the tax money in yer own pocket. Sincerely, Carolina Maria de Jesus.

True; yet, poverty in those areas is far worse than what we call poverty in developed countries (though both, of course, deserve attention!). I don't think they exist for our pity, but as humans we have no excuse to be ignorant of how others besides ourselves live.

the third world does not exist for the 1st world's pity. what is often left out is that $1 a day can buy you a lot more in the third world than in the 1st world

Carolina's one of our all-time favorite authors. She brought these conditions to worldwide attention. Thank her, and thank you.
