Optical fibre light transmission isn't lossless. Feeding it into the fibre and switching it around is even more lossy. Lossy means here some part of light gets transformed into heat which makes the power you could transmit over average optical fibers rather limited.
We can use electrical energy much more universally than radiation energy anyway.

But OK anyway this is a nice idea....

It wolud be never cheap enough.

in theory looks great but it can be done? will the 2 mil from google be enough?

Fascinating idea. We need this!

iooo007, I believe it can be done. You could basically build such a network to transfer solar energy but on very small scale (few KMs max). Benefits here are so huge, I think this is something worth researching. Hope the guys at the 10^100 project think so too!!

:) sad, but this is impossible :)

macsaba - impossible - no. BUT, it's true that using current technology, building such a fiber network would be VERY expansive.
The thing is, if we got the technology right for this, within reasonable costs, think of all the advantages. I strongly believe that a research project with bright enough people should at least look into it and come up with initial conclusions regarding the feasibility of this.
