Why is it that we consistently lower ourselves to the level of the immature people we're arguing with?

  • we regress and just start yelling opinions back. not really any thought behind it, just trying to counter i guess. This doesn't occur though if you don't value what the other persons opinion too much.

  • @frasian78 I see what you're saying but I disagree. I find I tend to lose my cool more often with people whose opinions I care less about - if anything, whenn I care what someone thinks I'm more careful to come up with intelligent and persuasive arguments, I think. Although that may be a function of the fact that the people whose opinions I care about are intelligent and mature to begin with lol. I really feel it's often directly proportionate to the maturity level of the other party.

  • @Mee551able Yeah, well, some people can shove it. lol.

  • @ellaphx Some ppl get upset Im an Atheist

  • @Mee551able Also, why apologise for your beliefs? You're not in anyone's church, this is the interwebz haha.

  • @Mee551able which I believe should be the ultimate goal in anyone's life, however they go about pursuing it.

  • @Mee551able Well, it has alot to do with my concept of god, which is still difficult to put into words. I think there's like, God the universe, which is random, and You the God, which is, obviously, up to you. God is you and me and the trees and the sky and your pet dog and the tv and the lovers and the fighters and.. just, everything. So I think you have to have faith in You the God, and your ability to interact and cope with God the universe, otherwise you'll never be happy,

  • @ellaphx Sorry I dont ;)

  • By mature, I don't mean reasonable, so much as composed. Able to reign in the emotions and behave in a way that society expects mature adults to behave. If I try that and it doesn't work, THEN I tend to regress. It's probably different for other people, idk.

  • Hmm I see what you're saying and I think I disagree - in fact I think you're more likely to lose your head with someone whose opinion you don't care about. Perhaps because if you value someone's opinion, you're more careful to say things that will change their mind. I agree that we regress and just start yelling opinions, but I've found with opinions I value I'm more likely to think carefully about my argument and put it forward with composure and maturity.
