In America, the day after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping day of the year. After celebrating an old-time tradition, we celebrate a new tradition of consuming in colossal amounts. Last year, Americans spent 9 billion dollars the day after Thanksgiving. It's no wonder this day has come to be known as "Black Friday."
Countries across the world agree to a child's right to education, but more than 75 million children would tell you that this is not happening. The United Nations researched what it would cost to restore this necessary and fundamental education: 9 billion dollars, sound familiar?
Imagine, a single day of shopping in one country could instead provide free education for every elementary-aged child on earth for an entire year.
That's something to think about when you hit the stores this year. What gift will you be shopping for?
