by what point of reference does Carter stand with the Thedolite on his back? how can Kinch get a reading accurately without first declinating the scope to true north ?

Do you remember the original Mission Impossible TV show? Same kind of thing-you always knew that in the end the SI team would win, but the plot developed, there was so many layers that it was impossible (no pun) not to watch.

This is an excellent example of a dumb plot made intensely enjoyable by supremely talented actors. The whole thing is so unbelievable yet we all find ourselves glued to the tube watching its highly predictable conclusion accomplished. They will never be another show that will ever equal it.
