At 9:30 am on Wednesday 11 November 2009, non-violent direct action group Community Opposing Destruction of the Environment positioned four giant banners from the top of the grain silos on Lindsay Street, Invermay, adjacent to the Gunns Ltd. headquarters. Six activists descended from the top of the silos to deploy the banners, each measuring twelve by two meters, which read 'Gunns pulp mill corruption' and 'No jobs on a dead island'. The action, timed to coincide with Gunns' Annual General Meeting, sends a clear and powerful message to both Gunns and the Tasmanian Government.
The six activists are all Launceston residents. The aim of the action is to highlight the blatant corruption and collusion between Gunns and the Tasmanian government which has surrounded Gunn's pulp mill since its inception.
"The people of Tasmania will not stand idly by while our future is written off in the name of a quick buck. This pulp mill is not a sound investment and any foreign banks, credit agencies or pulp and paper manufacturers should think twice about becoming involved in such a controversial and blatantly corrupt project, which has been rejected by the public at every turn." Rory Cadman said.
