  • This was one of many songs done by my Mother for my Father, as my dad was in the merchant navy durning the second world war.

  • I had just joined the British Merchant Navy when this song came out, you would get thown overboard if you even sneezed when this come one.

  • I sang to this with all my heart back in the 60s i dreamed of being a sailor graham

  • I work in a lovely little pub, called The Bear inn, in Wilton, Nr salisbury, Wiltshire. We have a very ancient cd juke box and Sailor by Petula is the pub anthem, there is not an evening goes by when it's not heard, with all the locals singing along to the chorus. Just amazing when you think it's 50 years since this song was no.1 in the UK.

Thanks Petula for this lovely song which still gives so much pleasure in 2011!

    Mike, The Bear Inn, Wilton.

  • we used to play this for my dad when he came back from sea, RIP mum and dad xxx

  • @MATNJAN1 so sad i do hope you find comfort from this splendid version now

    rip your wife

  • This song holds very painful memories for me of when my wife was ill in hospital and her mother (who could not talk or walk after a stroke) had come to visit not knowing that her daughter only had a couple of days left. Despite the pain she was suffering my wife found the strength to sit up in bed and, taking her mother's hand, began to sing this song to her (it was one of her mother's favourites). The emotion was so strong that I could not watch and left the room, a grown man crying. RIP J n H.

  • hi i can remember this song sung by petula back in 1961 when i was about 9 years old its still good
