  • Antibiotics keep sick animals out of the food chain.

  • If we buy our tires, toothpaste, cars, clothes, diapers, ketchup, soup, prepared green (bag) salad and TVs from factories, why not allow the farmer to use economy of scale and distribution models to produce cheap food for the US. With over 300 million people to feed, we will need more concentrated food production rather than less as Katie proposes.

  • I believe it time for America to end the Cheap food policy. Food should triple in price. Then maybe we all can produce organic & mine our soils. We all should go back to the 1920's The cities included. Not Just Farmers !

  • Oh and dont bite the hand that feeds you. Sure you can ask it to do something else but youll surely die if it falls! Even animals understand this concept.....

  • Ya know it really frustrates me that people such as Katie Couric use the media to basically bash the farmer and not discuss the other side of the story. If we are to change agriculture then we need to change many other industries and ideals. With less than 2% of the American population still farming as a full time job, they still produce enough food for themselves and over 200 other people. Dont blame the farmer for causing people tobe over weight when people are too lazy to get off their rears!

  • Just like hogs. We are tested 25 out every 100 for antibotics. If caught for antibotics we can not sell for 30 days, then only allowed to sell 10 hogs. Every hog is tested for 90 day. If a second violation accures. you are not allowed to sell for 6 months. A violation like that Will Put You Out of Business.

  • No I'm not a dairy farmer, But my dad was a dairy farmer. I know the rules they have to follow. There are supprise audits 3 to 4 times a year. any one time violation they either have to dump the milk until they meet health codes. I don't remember what the parts per million is, But it amounted to less than the size of a pencil eraser in a semi load of milk. Also they test daily for antibotics.

  • I agree, but just because YOU are responsible it doesn't mean everyone is. Especially factory farms...who a lot are run by corporations & whose bottom line is profit, not quality.

And on the milk issue...yeah, obviously Grade A would be cleaner but are you really going to say there are no foreign bodies in Grade A? And why does a pig farmer care if I drink milk?

Maybe if big corporations and fast food providers were more responsible real farmers wouldn't be affected by the antibiotic issue.

  • Timing is in order to pass H.R. 1549/S. 619, Non farmers want to tell farmers how to raise their livestock. If someone has a lifetime of experience in a profession someone outside does not know more than he does. I only use antibotics for treatment but I do not want that option taken away. Just as I would not take away antibotics from your children when they are needed.

  • Last week we had ABC throwing fits over docked tails on dairy cattle, now this week we have Katie Couric and CBS having a hissy fit over the use of antibiotics in meat animal production. Part of the goal is to create momentum, in order to pass H.R. 1549/S. 619, which would ban the routine use of antibiotics. Will the slander never cease?
