The poor condition of public education in America is an issue that goes way beyond the divide between democrats and republicans. Control of the White House, the senate and the house, has swapped between both parties several times over the years, and neither party has stepped up and made a difference in education.

Not really. The Republicans have always supported school vouchers for years to provide competition against these failed public schools and the Democrats had never supported because they were in bed with incompetent and greedy teachers unions. The Democrats claim always that there is no money for the school but most of the money given to them goes to the school administration.

Fair enough, but the fact remains that their "support" of that system hasn't exactly translated into results. I remember a time when republicans controlled the house, senate and white house, not too long ago in fact, and the best they could do was "no child left behind." Where was their support then?

I give you that. Republicans for some odd reasons govern horribly when they get into national office. The Bush Administration was a disaster for Republicans all the way around and they never use to be this "pro war". But in local governments they tend to have some pretty good ideas especailly on spending and education.

If I was President, I would eliminate the Department of Education cabinet position. However, if I could pick any person to be Secretary of Education then Joe Louis Clark would be my first choice.
