A car transverses the sleazy cityscape at night, accompanied by a soundtrack that alternates between breathy lounge-pop and shrill, atonal passages. An impossibly glamorous woman disrobes while an unidentifiable figure dons the requisite black leather gloves necessary for the evening's entertainment -- murder, mayhem and madness...
Welcome to the cinematic world of the giallo, a world where violence, sleaze, sex and style dominate.
Helmed with flare by directors such as Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Sergio Martino, Umberto Lenzi and Pupi Avati, and starring a host of international actors such as Barbara Bouchet, George Hilton, Mario Adorf and Filmbar70 favourite, Edwige Fenech, the world of the giallo was particularly enriched by the services of some of the most unbelievably gifted composers Italy had to offer at the time, including Ennio Morricone, Nora Orlandi and Bruno Nicolai.
A hymn to Italian excess, giallo is genre cinema venerated by fans like no other,

  • Hello Sir. Death Laid an Egg. Arthouse proto-giallo from '68. Directed by Giulio Questi, also staring Ewa Aulin and Gina Lollobrigida, with music by Bruo Maderna! Very strange - a mix of gialloesque thrills and chicken farming!
