So this was the showreel I put together when I was applying to SCAD. It's pretty much all of Worm vs Chicken with a couple experimental things I did in senior high-school and a short part of Soul Knights vs. Quam Singulari.

The sad thing is that, while it might've helped my admission out, this didn't win me an artistic scholarship. I guess I must suck. D'= But I got an academic scholarship for $3000. Better than nothing!

Here's the Read Me I attached to the video:

Juan Diego's Animation Showreel

In this showreel you'll see a few animations, all made in Flash, that I've finished over time, with the first three made in my Graphic Design II class in my senior year of high-school with my Wacom tablet. I'll give a brief description of each in order of appearance:

Worm vs. Chicken:

This was my first hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animation since I played with stick figures in 2003-2004 when I first discovered Flash. Afterwards, I'd animate with videogame sprites. This was a lot different than animating a stick-figure, however. In this case, I was animating an anthropomorphic chicken-like creature a bit too curious for his own good. Although the perspective is dominantly 2D, I experimented with things that I had not done before with frame-by-frame, like making the character's body pivot. I only used a couple motion clips and tweens for the chicken. Most of the tank's animation, however, is tweened. Camera movements were handled by a very helpful ActionScripted motion clip called vCam developed by the acclaimed Flash artist Sham Bhangal. As for the sound, I did all the voices myself and got most sounds off the internet and other from GarageBand. I ran into the common Flash sound desynchronization problem while adding sound to the movie, so I had to add the sound separately in iMovie and export as a large DV file. Eventually, however, I found a way to work around this in the main Flash file and finally had the project completed in a normal .SWF file. In the end, the project ended up being a good exercise of character-oriented frame-by-frame animation for me.

Morphing Test:

In here I tested the waters of frame-by-frame animation even further. In this short animation exercise, I introduced a ball the bounced on to the stage, then went through a series of bizarre transformations. The exercise here was to animate every frame of transformation and find creative ways to animate the transition from one entity to the next.

Rolling Ball Test:

My Graphic Design II teacher suggested that I should try to experiment with perspectives. First I drew two lines to show the depth of a pathway. Then, I tweened a simple ball that became larger as it went along the pathway, nearing the point of view. Then, to give the impression that the ball is rolling along the path, I animated a face frame-by-frame that went up and down the ball, its face being squashed each time it rolled on the floor.

Soul Knights vs. Quam Singulari:

This was a Flash movie that I finished around 2007. For a long time I was involved in spriting communities, "spriting" being the manipulation of videogame pixel-art. They'd regularly do things like fighting tournaments done in comics with other people's sprites. I volunteered to turn one outcome of a double tournament, involving my character (Neo Link), into a Flash movie. What was originally meant to
be a just short movie, however, turned out to be much more amibitious, reaching over six minutes in length. In this showreel, I include a small excerpt of this Flash, showcasing an intense fight in between the tournament fighters.
