Just a short video showing some scenery from Finland close to Nummela (EFNU) Airport. The aircraft in question is the S.M.A.N Petrel somewhat modified and running the HKS 700E engine.

  • Eipä ole tätäkään näkynyt ilmassa tänä vuonna :(

  • @NiqiV

  • do you need a licence to fly these aircraft?

  • @TheWisey1234

Yes you do need a license, the Ultralight category here is rather similar as it is in e.g. Canada, with a maximum Gross weight of 450 kg land planes and 495 Kg seaplanes, max stall speed of 65 km/h ( sorry about the metrics but you can use Google to translate it to mph if you like.

The requirements are, basic health, 48hrs of theory and min. 25hrs of flight training. It is good that there is training as some of the new ultralights are more demanding than some GA airplanes are.

  • next time give us an outside cam! nice job

  • Thanks, I will try to do that. There is a plan for a whole 10 minutes long film of amphibian flying in Finland next summer, and there will be lots of different ones in that, not jsut mine.

  • Take-off Distance at MTOW (450kg/1000lbs) over 15m obstacle

    Land: 200m (650 ft)

    Water: 450m (1500 ft)

    Climbrate at MTOW is 2 m/s (400 f/min)

    Consumption 11 l/h (2.9 gallons/hour)

  • Thanks for the comment Rob,

The reason for the HKS700 is 4-stroke reliablility, have had just too many forced landings due to 2-stroke 582's, and I was more than happy to trade 5 hp to the reliability of the HKS 700E. The performance have not decreased mentionably.

with about 20000 landable lakes in our little country, you get... well everywhere ;-)

  • Great video with the unusual camera positions.

    Love the aircraft!

Could you give us some more information on it's performance? Things like take off distances, climb rate etc.

I searched around and the other Petrels seem to use the Rotax 582. How come yours has a HKS 700E?

    Sorry about so many questions!

    Rob
