Eben Upton is the founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, which is developing a $25 microcomputer with the goal of putting programmable hardware in the hands of every child in the UK. Eben is responsible for the overall software and hardware architecture of the Raspberry Pi device.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

It's popular for a reason but if you don't like it then don't buy it.

Obviously you misunderstood what I meant. The use of Windows-based computers in education, in my opinion, is a barrier to actually learning about computers.

Raspberry Pi is a hardware platform. Windows is an operating system. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Also, the Pi is meant to introduce kids to programming and the fun of computer science. It has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with replacing the industry de facto standard operating system.

Go buy a vtech Tote and learn about the 4-year-old level basics of computers first before typing nonsense.

Linux is an excellent platform for children to learn from. I still use Ubuntu and KDE through VirtualBox on my laptop, and I'm looking to learn more about Raspberry Pi.

To me he just sounded nervous. Hoping for 1,000 kids to get hooked on computer science doesn't sound cocky to me.

Kids need a chance to program. Linux is an excellent platform. Programs can be written with very simple tools. There is really no need for a huge bloated IDE to get in the way. The Pi is a very affordable platform for kids to save up money to purchase. Many languages are freely available and you have the most powerful text editors possible in the form of Emacs and Vim.

I'd disagree. I was hooked from start to finish.

Thank you for making the PI. I just got mine... I am setting up an OS on it right now.

Obviously you have never build anything for the masses. building one of something is not that hard, or ever 100 of something can be done with with a few buddies. But to scale up to 10k units is a whole other matter. To make things worse they receive requests in the 100s of thousands for those first 10k units. The people at RPi have done an awsome job of scaling up to 100's of thousands of units in just a few months.
