The motion: "Aid to Africa is doing more harm than good"
Moderator: Brian Lehrer
Speaking for the motion: George Ayittey, William Easterly and David Rieff
Speaking against the motion: C. Payne Lucas, John McArthur and Gayle Smith
IQ2US marks the launch of Oxford-style debating -- one motion, one moderator, three advocates for the motion, three against -- in New York City. Each evening begins at 6:00P with a complimentary cocktail period. As you enter the theater before the debate starts at 6:45P, you cast your vote for or against the evening's motion. Those results are displayed midway through the debate as each side makes its statements. After all six panelists speak, the audience has a chance to ask the speakers questions and vote again. The debate finishes with brief summations from the panelists, the votes are tallied and a winning side is declared.

Africa doesn't need aid. They need trade.
Before that they need to get rid of the Western Selected leadership and re evaluate the western drawn borders. Europeans are the reason for the state of Africa and us "savages" were just fine before they arrived.
They're bent on messing us up. Making Africa dependent on "aid" and ultimately the people will be enslaved to work off the "aid" that's given. If nothing is done the whole continent will be enslaved with no hope of progression.

please dont send aids to african governments. They use it to buy weapons from the same people that gave them those aids and then oppress anybody that opposes them. Please keep your aids to urselves. You are sponsoring terrorism in africa. I love Africa like shit and hate to see anybody try to claim credit to helping people they are infact indirectly torturing. Dont sell weapons to african governments, dont send aids to african governments. Africans can raise the money themselves.

I am from Africa, and the poor people never get the aid. It goes into the back pockets of the goverment. Just like Haiti. Oh and BTW the NWO would hate africa to prosper. Less people less to feed

Swiss chocolate is the best in the world..where does the beans come from?
Belgium diamonds are the best in the world.. Where do stones come from?
Aid is another way for the world to pretend it isn't obviously keeping Africa down intentionally, to remain 3rd world.
Government organizations and NGO's are perpetuating subordination and dependence on foreign aid, and they continue to distract us with AID/HIV crisis there to avert the obvious inequality and modern day colonialism.

I agree that there is a continuum when it comes to corruption and repressive regimes and if a list was drawn up of those we find unacceptable it would be somewhat arbitrary.

I agree, but I think of it more as a relative issue than that. If you are going to politicise / moralise access to banks and bank accounts, then under what basis do you do it? Would you accept money from Mugabe? No? How about Zuma? Putin? What must inevitably follow is the running of banks along national interest, and if it's free market liberalism you want, then I'm not sure it's possible under such a system.

World leaders should demand that banks are transparent. They are for accounts used by terrorists but not for corrupt politicians whose actions contribute to the corruption of their countrymen. This has to change.
