This video shows how I disassemble and clean a second hand (used) Medela Pump in Style breast pump. The procedure is very easy (don't even need tools). Of course you perform this operation AT YOUR OWN RISK - Medela and FDA recommendations say you should buy a new pump and that using a used pump is not safe. The FDA says "the proper cleaning of cleaning and sterilization of breast pumps requires the removal of any fluid that has entered the pumping mechanism itself". I believe the procedure I use achieves this requirement. However, I am not an expert so please use your own judgment.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I just bought a used one from craiglist and I was quite concerned. Thank you again. This was VERY HELPFUL!!

  • Thanks for this helpful video!!

  • @Rockyourskinnyjeans I just brought out my medela pump in style I used with my daughter 5 years ago and there is old breast milk residue in the tubing. gross!

  • they try to say that milk can get inside there, but from use and experience--I have never ever had any milk get into my medela tubing or inside the pump or diaphragm. I used the breastpump with my first child and will be using it again with my second.

  • Great video. Wanted to clean my pump since it has been 2 years since we last used it.

  • I just bought a used medela pump in style. This video is very informative. Thanks.

By the way, is there a way to access how the motor on the left is interfaced with the armature on the right? Do you think they are interfaced with gears inside that metal box at the bottom? Could it be opened for accessing?

  • I did this with one that I just bought. It was only used for 5 months and the mom sold it to me for $30. It was super easy to clean and saved me TONS of money!!!

  • Thanks, this was a real help.

  • thanks!
